The American Legion was chartered by Congress in 1919 as a patriotic veterans organization. Focusing on service to veterans, servicemembers and communities, the Legion evolved from a group of war-weary veterans of World War I into one of the most influential nonprofit groups in the United States. Membership swiftly grew to over 1 million, and local posts sprang up across the country. Today, membership stands at over 2.4 million in 14,000 posts worldwide. The posts are organized into 55 departments: one each for the 50 states, along with the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, France, Mexico and the Philippines.
About Post 275
The American Legion Post 275 was established in La Jolla in 1924. Post 275 has helped veterans since World War I. The help has come in many ways including hospital visits, caring for homeless veterans highlighted by the annual Stand Down event sponsored by the Veterans Administration, which provides food, clothing, shelter and medical screening. Other activities include sponsoring students from La Jolla High School for the American Legion Boys State Program. The selected students are sent to our State Capital for 3 days of training in government. The Post is active in supporting veteran’s employment opportunities through governmental programs and Post member’s professional and business relationships in the community. Most notably, Post 275 established the Mt. Soledad Cross and Memorial, one of the most unique veterans memorials in the United Stated to honor veterans. Over 3,300 veterans are recognized. Members of the Post participate in Memorial Day and Veterans Day activities at Mt. Soledad. The Post depends on membership dues and donations from the La Jolla community to accomplish our endeavors. For those who would like to contribute, donations may be sent to PO Box 188, La Jolla, CA 92038-0188. The Post Finance Officer will acknowledge your donation and our webmaster will gratefully add you to our Sponsor page with business or personal information if you like.
